I'm a 26 year old Microbiology degree student with a distinct penchant for computers. I'm a staunch believer in the open-source ethos. I prefer the Debian linux distribution, but also have machines running Gentoo, Redhat and Suse. I am not really sure how I used closed-source software for so long...

As far as computing goes, I program in Java mainly, but can also get by in Perl, C and C++. I help curate a number of databases in MySQL, and have written web pages and database wrappers for these databases in PHP, served on linux Apache boxes. I am also getting to grips with other web services.

I'm currently involved in a large comparative genomics postdoc called ComparaGRID. More information is available about this project on the ComparaGRID blog.

I enjoy mountain-biking (although Norfolk isn't the best place for it), reading (mostly sci-fi such as Iain M Banks, Stephen Donaldson and Philip K Anderson), racquet sports (squash, tennis), skiing, swimming and making music by playing the guitar. I beta-test Cedega, the linux Win32/DirectX API implementation developed by Transgaming.
